3 Easy Steps to Start Meditating

Meditation research shows that regular meditation can lower blood pressure, decrease chronic pain and increase mental clarity. However, many people are daunted by the thought of sitting silently (without thinking!) for even 5 minutes. Here are some easy tips to help get you started with relaxing and stress-relieving meditation.
  • Sit cross-legged or in a comfortable chair with your back straight and your legs forming a 90 degree angle with the ground, and your feet shoulder width apart.
  • Close your eyes and breathe normally. Many people are surprised to find that right away, breathing deeply is difficult. After a few breaths, try breathing deeper with your abdomen. Practice will make deep breathing easier.
  • Quiet your mind. Don’t feel frustrated if thoughts keep coming into your head; just let them come, but don’t dwell on them. If you find your mind wandering, just come back to your breathing, and if needed, focus on a word or mantra that calms you.
